Steeped in history, the Bourne Hall we know today stands on the site of a former Georgian mansion, which in its later years served as a boarding school for girls. In 1965, the architects A.G. Sheppard Fidler & Associates were commissioned to design a combined library, museum, and social centre. Project architect Bob Loren (FRIBA) conceived a distinctive circular building set within a public park, featuring a lake and ornamental gardens originally part of Garbrand Hall.

The renowned local firm WS Atkins & Partners acted as consulting engineers, while D J Bendle & Partners provided quantity surveying services. Bourne Hall officially opened its doors on 9th February 1970 and, true to the architects’ vision, remains a vibrant community hub in Ewell, housing a library, museum, concert hall, cafes, and numerous other facilities.

The building’s envelope is defined by a bold and unique design, featuring 270 bespoke windows across two floors. As the main contractor, Glaze London expertly managed the fenestration works, working closely alongside specialist trades to ensure minimal disruption to the public and strict adherence to health and safety standards. Particular care was taken to liaise with the local council and conservation officers, ensuring all works preserved the building’s listed status by specifying and installing replacement window systems on a ‘like-for-like’ basis.

The project was completed within the required timeline, earning praise from both the conservation officers and the client for the exceptional quality and professionalism demonstrated throughout. Glaze London’s expert craftsmanship has breathed new life into this architectural landmark, securing its preservation and enjoyment by the local community for many years to come.
